Objectives
To ensure a minimum level of income to persons who have attained age 65 or are blind or disabled, and whose income and resources are below specified levels. SEC 1601- SSI was created for the purpose of establishing a national program to provide supplemental security income to individuals who attained age 65 or are blind, or disabled.
Eligible applicants
• Individuals age 65 or older, or • Individuals of any age who are blind or have a disability and have limited income and resources.
Financial assistance range
Monthly Federal cash payments range from $1 to $914 for an aged, blind, or disabled individual who does not have an eligible spouse, and from $1 to $1,371 for a married couple who are each either aged, blind, or disabled. These rates became effective January 2023. The average Federal monthly benefit payment for January 2023 was $654.
